And what a way to go out.... The first time Lisa and I were able to make it to a Yankee game in NY, (A Yankees vs. Sox game I might add) and they blow it. A-Rod couldn't hit the broadside of a barn and wasn't fielding that well either and Giambi.... well... maybe I shouldn't start on the Giambi rant.... Not that the Red Sox third run in the fifth inning came in when he decided to prematurely walk off the field or anything.... and of course there was that lovely error where he had the ball in his mitt and then we watched it fly back out of the glove to allow more crazy red shirted people to advance! Grrrr....... But at least we finally made it to the stadium before they move next door! ;P
As much as I hate driving in NYC I think that that may be the best way to get back out after a game. The cramped, obnoxious crowds packing us into the subway and then separating us on the train ride back was enough to make me start feeling claustrophobic. By the way... NEVER get on the train at 125th street. It's just not worth it. Take the 20 minute subway ride to Grand Central and get a seat... with the people you came with. That way you don't wind up sitting on the floor of the train in the entranceway for half the ride. Though you do meet some very interesting people when you do! ;P
Crazy guy on the train ride in! Thankfully he only rode with us for one stop, but even the brief trip to Milford was made sketchie by the crazy man reeking of pot and booze and entirely too much cologne randomly jumping from topics ranging from his own personal thoughts on predestination and religion to 'how to get away with slacking at work' and anecdotes of his threatening neighborhood children and jumping out of a second story window while tripping on acid. Lisa firmly maintains that things like this only happen when I'm around. Maybe I should just stop leaving my apartment... However the friends on the trip home were much more agreeable, as was the conductor on the way into the city! We were so crowded I got separated from Lisa and wound up blocking on of the doors in the entrance of the train. I was leaning against a poster discussing the game with the three red sox fans who had taken up the "Whale Watch in Maine!" poster directly opposite myself when the tall stranger began towering next to me. I really don't think I've ever felt as small and insignificant before! Of course the fact that this individual was probably 6'10" (Lisa, correct me if I'm exaggerating), his hair was brushing the top of the train, probably aided in my impression of being minuscule! He was freaking tall! I was very relieved to find an agreeable personality accompanying the height though. I was politely complemented on my good sportsmanship while discussing the fact that the Red Sox did actually play well with the nice Sox fans across from me and the five of us started into easy conversation about the differences between the good and evil fans in major team rivalries and regional differences. Of course I was a little surprised when tall man (who's name I later learned was Kasey - yeah... no idea on spelling other than it's not K.C.) excused himself behind me and began pulling down the poster I was leaning on. Apparently the perks of meeting people who frequent the train is that you benefit from their knowledge and experience andI was able to sit as comfortably as I could without getting crud all over my pants. ;P It was refreshing meeting someone that I could fall into such a companionable, continuous stream of conversation with. I haven't met someone where I could just babble and be babbled at who actually seemed interested and interesting since I met Chris! I was very sad when my Red Sox friends found seats in another car and Casey had to get off at Darien. But my Red Sox friends were replaced by a gentleman who works at the post office in Stamford and takes the train everyday from New Haven and one of his fellow train buddies so I had at least a little bit of conversation until a seat, thankfully, opened up next to Lisa and I was able to talk to someone familiar again.
All the interesting interactions of the various trains and subways did get me thinking though. Actually something crazy Milford man said.. that we were meeting on this train because we were meant to. That at some point our lives were destined to cross, either by God's will or pure happenstance somehow we met. And over the course of 24 hours I met some very interesting people and learned about individual state's rights, that Southern California has a baseball team, - I'm evil.. I forgot who they were already! But Barry Bonds plays for them now! ;P - that I'm not the only one who's afraid of getting on the wrong subway, not alone in thinking Mohegan Sun is better than Foxwoods, and that I'm also not alone in being in a very confused part of my life right now. You can't help but wonder what would have happened if you met any of these people on any other day in any other situation if you'd have reached the same conclusions about them or if you'd form an entirely new opinion of them based on the environment. If I'd still met Casey but he'd had something more engaging then reruns of Car Talk on his iPhone. If the Red jacketed man on the subway and his wife I had seen at Foxwoods, would we even have spoken? Or would we have passed each other without a second thought instead of us becoming 'find the right subway and train' buddies. If I had met the crazy Milford man in Milford as he was raving next to the camera store my mom and I frequent instead of the train would I have even responded when he addressed me. Would he have addressed me. It's an odd thing to try and process. And I may be trying to wax philosophical... so I think I'm done for the day...
Long story very short:
Good, fun trip to NYC! ;P
PS: If you're going to take the MetroNorth into NYC and have ANY subway traveling to do... get the MetroCard when you get your train ticket... it's neat and saves some hassle! ;P |
